Heavy-duty bed of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

Heavy-Duty Cast Iron Double-Row Bed Structure

    • The bed of the Spire 1530 5-Axis CNC Wood Lathe is manufactured through integral casting with high-strength gray cast iron. The flake graphite structure within gray cast iron effectively absorbs and dissipates vibration, providing the machine bed with excellent damping performance. With a total machine weight of 2,500 kg and a maximum wall thickness of 30 mm, the high mass and robust structure provide superior stability, effectively suppressing vibration and impact generated during high-speed operation.
    • After casting, the machine bed undergoes annealing and vibration stress relief treatment to fully release internal residual stress and improve long-term dimensional stability. Key load-bearing areas are reinforced with optimized rib structures to further enhance overall rigidity. The mounting surfaces for guide rails and racks are precisely milled to ensure high flatness and accurate positioning. The entire machine is finished with a white fine-textured powder coating, forming a durable and wear-resistant protective layer. This not only enhances the overall appearance of the equipment but also improves resistance against scratches and corrosion, reducing the risk of surface damage during long-term operation.
    • The machine adopts a double-row bed design, with the workpiece clamping system and machining tool system installed on two independent beds. Each motion system is equipped with its own dedicated transmission mechanism. This structure optimizes the machine’s center-of-gravity distribution while minimizing vibration transmission and mechanical interference between the two systems, resulting in smoother motion performance and higher machining accuracy.

    High-Strength Leveling Feet

    • To fully achieve the high-precision machining performance of the Spire 5-Axis CNC Wood Lathe, the machine relies on a solid foundation and precise leveling support. Therefore, CATEKCNC equips the machine with nine heavy-duty adjustable leveling feet, each providing a maximum load capacity of up to 5 tons. The installation positions of each leveling foot are carefully calculated based on load distribution and structural analysis. Strategically arranged at key load-bearing points and around the machine’s center of gravity, they ensure more uniform force distribution, effectively support the machine weight, and minimize bed deformation caused by uneven support.
    • Beyond their optimized positioning, the leveling feet are also designed with precise adjustment mechanisms and durable structural features. Each foot adopts a threaded adjustment system, allowing accurate height adjustment to compensate for uneven floor conditions and achieve precise machine leveling during installation and commissioning. The main body is manufactured from high-strength carbon steel, providing excellent compressive strength and deformation resistance for long-term heavy-load operation. Its surface is treated with anti-corrosion electroplating, ensuring reliable durability even in humid and dusty workshop environments.
    • In addition to providing stable support, the leveling feet are designed to reduce vibration transmission during machining. The bottom of each foot is equipped with a thickened PVC anti-slip pad that offers excellent wear resistance, cushioning, and vibration-damping performance. The specially designed anti-slip pattern increases friction with the ground, effectively reducing the risk of machine displacement caused by operational vibration. Meanwhile, the PVC pads absorb machining-induced vibration and minimize transmission to the floor, further enhancing machine stability and machining accuracy.
Headstock of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe
Tailstock of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

High-Strength Cast Iron Headstock and Tailstock

    • Both the headstock and tailstock are manufactured through integral casting with high-strength cast iron and undergo stress relief treatment to effectively eliminate internal residual stresses. This process minimizes the risk of structural deformation and accuracy variation caused by stress release during long-term operation, ensuring excellent machining accuracy stability throughout the service life of the CNC wood lathe.
    • In terms of structural design, both the headstock and tailstock adopt a multi-sided polygonal structure with chamfered corners. This design effectively reduces stress concentration, minimizes localized fatigue damage, and lowers vibration risks during operation. In addition, all chamfered edges feature a rounded obtuse-angle transition design, improving operational safety and reducing the risk of accidental injury caused by sharp edges during machine use.
    • After casting, the headstock and tailstock undergo precision machining processes, with key areas such as transmission contact surfaces and the center chuck mounting holes receiving high-accuracy machining. This ensures excellent concentricity of the center mounting holes and precise alignment between the components and the machine bed and guide rails. This manufacturing process enhances overall machine stability, reduces load deviations and abnormal wear during long-term operation, and ensures reliable machining performance over time.

Tailstock (large-diameter) of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe
Chuck of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    Headstock Center (Drive Center)

    • The drive center adopts three deep groove ball bearings with oversized inner diameters and larger rolling elements, providing higher radial load capacity and increased contact area. The bearings are arranged in a two-front-one-rear configuration, with two 6214 bearings installed in parallel at the front and one 6213 bearing at the rear. This optimized arrangement provides a stable dual-support structure, significantly shortening the spindle’s load span, limiting angular deflection at the spindle front end, and reducing radial runout. As a result, the system ensures superior workpiece concentricity and dimensional accuracy after machining.
    • The spindle system is driven by a 7.5 kW VEICHI servo motor through a synchronous belt transmission, supporting both continuous high-speed rotation mode and high-precision indexing positioning mode. In continuous rotation mode, the spindle drives the workpiece at high speed for conventional turning operations, allowing the machining of various rotational components such as staircase columns, wooden vases, candle holders, and table legs. In indexing mode, the spindle accurately positions the workpiece according to programmed angles, enabling the 5-axis machining spindle to perform detailed operations on specific areas, including pattern engraving, drilling, grooving, and planing.
    • The spindle end adopts a threaded screw-in mounting design, allowing different types of workholding accessories to be replaced according to machining requirements, including various sizes of centers and chucks. Different center diameters can accommodate workpieces of different sizes, making them suitable for slender rotational components such as Roman columns, staircase posts, baseball bats, and tool handles. The chuck is ideal for face machining applications. Through single-end clamping, it enables the processing of workpieces requiring an open end, such as wooden bowls, wooden plates, pen holders, and nesting dolls.

Switch for tailstock locking and clamping of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    Tailstock Center (Revolving Center)

    • The tailstock center works together with the drive center to clamp and position the workpiece by applying counteracting support force. The main body of the center is manufactured from 40Cr high-strength alloy steel, which offers excellent hardenability, high yield strength, and superior fatigue resistance. In addition, the internal structure incorporates three sets of deep groove ball bearings, improving rotational accuracy and operational stability. Different sizes of Morse taper centers can be replaced according to the diameter requirements of different workpieces, enabling flexible adaptation to various machining applications.
    • The tailstock is equipped with a pneumatic locking system and a pneumatic clamping system. The pneumatic locking system is used to secure the tailstock position before machining, ensuring stable support throughout the machining process. The pneumatic clamping system uses a short-stroke cylinder to achieve rapid workpiece clamping and release. It supports both manual and automatic operating modes. In manual mode, operators can complete clamping and releasing operations through a control switch installed on the tailstock. In automatic mode, the pneumatic clamping system can work together with the automatic loading and unloading system, automatically clamping the workpiece after loading is completed. Two control switches are installed on the tailstock for independent manual control of tailstock locking and workpiece clamping. Both switches are from Schneider and equipped with protective covers, effectively preventing wood chips and dust from entering while reducing the risk of accidental activation.
    • Before machining, operators only need to adjust and lock the tailstock position according to the workpiece length. The automatic clamping system then secures the workpiece and initiates the machining process. After machining is completed, the clamping mechanism automatically releases the finished workpiece, preparing the machine for the next production cycle. This automated clamping process reduces manual intervention and eliminates repetitive setup operations, improving machining efficiency while ensuring greater consistency in batch production.

Steady rest of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe
Retractable pin for steady rest of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    Steady Rest Support System

    • The steady rest provides additional support for workpieces during machining, preventing slender components from experiencing radial deflection or bending deformation caused by centrifugal forces generated during high-speed rotation and cutting forces. This improves rotational stability during the machining of long and slender workpieces, reduces vibration and tool marks, and enhances surface finish and contour consistency. The steady rest is suitable for machining various slender rotational components, including baluster columns, walking sticks, table legs, clothes rails, candle holders, and flutes.
    • The steady rest is equipped with a large-diameter bearing support sleeve, which contacts the outer surface of the workpiece through an annular support structure, providing stable and uniform radial support. Different sizes of support sleeves can be selected according to the workpiece diameter. The annular support design provides a larger contact area, effectively distributing machining forces and reducing localized pressure concentration. Internally, the steady rest adopts large-size 6021 and 60830 bearings, which reduce operating resistance and contact wear while maintaining stable performance during high-speed rotation.
    • The steady rest is controlled through a pneumatic retractable pin installed on the tool holder. Controlled by the CNC system, the retractable pin can extend or retract according to machining requirements. When extended, the retractable pin engages with the positioning hole underneath the steady rest, creating a mechanical connection between the tool holder and the steady rest. This design provides enhanced machining flexibility: the steady rest can either move synchronously with the cutting tool to provide continuous dynamic support throughout the machining process, or remain fixed at a specific position to provide localized support for designated machining areas.

      • Internal Boring Tool: Mainly used for hollowing operations on the end face of workpieces. During this process, the drive center is replaced with a chuck for single-end clamping. Typical applications include end-face machining of nesting dolls, vases, and pen holders.
End-face machining combination of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    End-Face Machining Combination

    • In woodworking lathe applications, an important machining scenario involves turning the end face of workpieces such as wooden vases, bowls, Russian nesting dolls, and wooden handles. These workpieces typically require single-end clamping, rendering the traditional center-clamping method—using both the spindle center and tailstock center—unsuitable. Additionally, conventional side-mounted turning tools often fail to effectively reach the end-face area.
    • The CK-1530-LSP-5AXIS CNC Wood Lathe comes standard with a professional end-face machining solution, consisting of a high-precision self-centering chuck and a right-angle shank internal boring tool. Prior to machining, the taper center on the spindle headstock is removed and replaced with the chuck, which securely holds the workpiece from one end through its jaws. Simultaneously, an internal boring tool is installed on the tool station, allowing it to extend deep into the workpiece end face for hollowing and profile forming operations.
    • To accommodate diverse machining requirements, CATEKCNC offers multiple chuck options in various diameters and jaw configurations, including three-jaw and four-jaw versions. Each chuck comes with one set of standard jaws and one set of reverse jaws, for external diameter clamping and internal expansion clamping, respectively. The jaws are integrally hardened for superior wear resistance, and paired with a precision locking structure to ensure secure, long-term clamping without loosening. Additionally, all chucks feature a self-centering design, allowing all jaws to move synchronously during adjustment and eliminating the need for repeated manual alignment. This guarantees high concentricity and stable operation under high-speed rotation.

4-Station machining head of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    5-Axis 4-Station Machining Head

    • The most distinctive feature of the CK-1530-LSP-5AXIS is its advanced 5-axis machining capability, which is achieved through the 4-station machining head. The machining head features rotational movement, allowing it to automatically switch between different machining tools or adjust tool orientations according to processing requirements, enabling angled machining operations. Equipped with RTCP functionality, the machining head can automatically compensate for tool tip position changes caused by tool rotation and tilting, ensuring accurate toolpath control even under complex spatial tool orientations. With RTCP, programmers no longer need to manually calculate complicated spatial geometric relationships; instead, they can focus on product modeling and toolpath design, significantly reducing the complexity of 5-axis programming.
    • The 4-station machining head features an ER40 tool holder interface, accommodating tools with a maximum shank diameter of 26 mm. One station is dedicated to a planing tool, delivering powerful material removal for efficiently machining complex three-dimensional contours. The machining head housing adopts an integral casting structure, providing excellent rigidity. After manufacturing, each head undergoes CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) inspection, where machining accuracy, perpendicularity, and concentricity are strictly verified to ensure reliable long-term operation. A dust protection plate is installed beneath the mounting plate to prevent wood chips and dust from spreading toward the rear area, helping keep the transmission system clean.
    • The 4-station machining head (B-axis), together with the three linear axes (X/Y/Z) and the indexable spindle (A-axis), forms a complete 5-axis system. Compared with 3-axis lathes (limited to turning) and 4-axis lathes (adding indexing for drilling/grooving/engraving), the 5-axis system enables angled drilling, milling, engraving, and complex 3D profiling through angular head rotation. This advanced capability allows efficient production of irregular furniture components and custom-shaped parts, such as sculpted table legs, chair legs, bed legs, sofa arms, chair arms, chair backs, and wooden coat hangers.

    Automatic Sanding Unit

    • All CATEKCNC multifunctional CNC wood lathes are equipped with sanding units to improve surface finish, remove machining marks, and eliminate minor irregularities after turning and milling. The CK-1530-LSP-5AXIS 5-Axis CNC Wood Lathe comes standard with a sisal sanding wheel, which is installed on the left side of the turning tool stations. During machining, the sanding wheel remains in the retracted position. When surface finishing is required, the CNC system automatically controls the pneumatic mechanism to extend the sanding wheel and bring it into contact with the workpiece for sanding operations.
    • The sanding wheel adopts a combination structure of sisal fiber and abrasive strips, equipped with 320-grit sandpaper. The quick-change abrasive strip design allows users to replace sanding materials with different grits according to specific surface finishing requirements. During high-speed rotation, the sisal layer not only provides a polishing effect but also offers radial support for the abrasive strips, improving overall sanding performance. The sanding wheel has a diameter of 230 mm and a width of 50 mm. It is driven by a dedicated 1.1 kW brushless servo motor, with continuously adjustable speed from 0 to 6,000 rpm, enabling flexible adaptation to different surface finishing requirements.
    • To meet different sanding requirements for various products, the CNC wood lathe can also be equipped with optional oscillating sanding rollers and belt sanding systems. The oscillating sanding roller not only rotates at high speed but also performs axial reciprocating movement, effectively reducing localized wear and improving sanding uniformity on both round bar and flat-surface workpieces. The belt sanding system adopts a continuous loop abrasive belt structure, making it suitable for large-area continuous sanding of cylindrical and rotational workpieces. The belt sanding system is equipped with an adjustable top contact wheel in the middle section. When the top wheel is raised, it changes the contact shape between the sanding belt and the workpiece, creating a V-shaped sanding contact area. This allows the abrasive belt to reach deeper into areas such as staircase columns, grooved components, and irregular contours, achieving more detailed and uniform surface finishing.

Stability in Every Axis, Excellence in Every Machining

Hiwin (Taiwan) P level 30 linear guideways of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe
Four Hiwin (Taiwan) P level 30 linear guideways for X-axis

    HIWIN (Taiwan) P-Level Linear Guideways

    • The CNC wood lathe is equipped with HIWIN P-level precision linear guideways. Different guideway specifications are selected according to the load requirements of each motion system. The main motion axes adopt 30 mm-wide guideways, the automatic loading and unloading system uses 20 mm-wide guideways, and the tool holder feed axes are equipped with 25 mm-wide guideways. Compared with commonly used guideway sizes, these wider guideways provide higher load capacity and significantly improve the rigidity and stability of each motion axis during operation. In addition, HIWIN linear guideways offer excellent linear accuracy and parallelism, with running parallelism reaching 10–15 μm per meter, providing reliable support for maintaining high-precision machining performance over long-term operation.
    • HIWIN linear guideways utilize a recirculating ball rolling structure, reducing friction resistance between the slider and rail to approximately 1/50 of that of conventional sliding guideways. This low-friction design significantly reduces the driving resistance of each linear axis and improves the machine’s dynamic response capability. Meanwhile, reduced friction minimizes heat generation during operation, providing an important foundation for the 80,000 mm/min rapid traverse speed achieved by the CATEKCNC Spire CNC Wood Lathes.
    • HIWIN guideways adopt a classic four-row Gothic arch contact design, allowing steel balls to form four-point contact with the raceways at a 45° contact angle. This structure evenly distributes loads from multiple directions, including radial, lateral, and vertical forces, effectively extending guideway service life under long-term heavy-load operation. Furthermore, the arc groove design helps absorb high-frequency vibrations generated during machining, reducing turning marks and improving the surface finish of finished workpieces.
YYC (Taiwan) ground helical rack & pinion of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

YYC (Taiwan) High-Precision Ground Helical Rack & Pinion

    • To improve the travel speed of linear axes over long strokes, CATEKCNC adopts a high-performance rack and pinion transmission system on the long-axis drive mechanism. Compared with traditional ball screw transmission, rack and pinion systems are not limited by stroke length and can maintain higher transmission efficiency and faster movement speeds during large-scale, high-speed positioning. This makes them particularly suitable for applications requiring long travel distances and frequent reciprocating movements.
    • The rack and pinion system adopts YYC precision ground-grade racks from Taiwan, manufactured strictly according to DIN 867 standards. The rack base material is made from high-strength medium-carbon steel or alloy steel and undergoes high-frequency induction hardening, providing the tooth surfaces with higher hardness and excellent wear resistance. The tooth surfaces are then further processed through precision grinding and four-side grinding processes, improving tooth profile accuracy and pitch consistency. With a surface roughness of Ra 0.8, the rack effectively reduces friction resistance and impact vibration during gear engagement.
    • Compared with spur gear structures of the same module, the helical gear design provides a larger meshing area and more uniform force distribution, allowing higher torque transmission capacity. During high-speed operation, the progressive engagement characteristics of helical gears effectively reduce gear impact, backlash, and operating noise, resulting in smoother and more stable axis movement.
TBI (Taiwan) ground ball screws of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

TBI (Taiwan) High-Precision Ground Ball Screw

    • The feed axes of the machining tools and the vertical lifting axis of the machining spindle head on the Spire CNC Wood Lathe adopt ball screw transmission to achieve extremely precise micro-feed control. CATEKCNC utilizes TBI precision ground ball screws from Taiwan. Through precision grinding processes, ground ball screws achieve exceptionally high lead accuracy and extremely low axial backlash, eliminating the inherent forming errors found in rolled ball screws. In addition, their refined surface finish and optimized raceway geometry significantly reduce friction and heat generation, providing higher system rigidity and smoother motion performance.
    • The recirculating ball structure converts traditional sliding friction into rolling friction, greatly reducing operating resistance. Compared with conventional ACME lead screws, ball screws require only approximately one-third of the driving torque, reducing the load on the drive system while improving motion response and operational smoothness. Even under low-speed, high-load machining conditions, the ball screw maintains smooth movement and effectively prevents issues such as sticking, vibration, and crawling caused by excessive friction resistance.
    • The core components of TBI ball screws are manufactured from high-strength carbon steel and chrome-molybdenum alloy steel and undergo strict heat treatment processes. The hardness of critical ball track contact areas reaches HRC 58–64, providing excellent wear resistance, fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability. Even under long-term high-frequency reciprocating motion and continuous machining loads, the ball screws maintain stable transmission performance, providing a reliable foundation for the Spire CNC Wood Lathe to maintain high-precision machining capability over extended operation.
High-precision diaphragm coupling of Spire 1530 5-axis CNC wood lathe

    Diaphragm Coupling

    • The double-diaphragm coupling is used to connect the servo motor and ball screw. Its core structure consists of two sets of high-strength, thin-walled stainless-steel diaphragms positioned at the front and rear, with the two diaphragm sets connected through an intermediate spacer. Unlike traditional gear couplings or elastic couplings, which compensate for misalignment through gear meshing or deformation of rubber-based elastic elements, the double-diaphragm coupling absorbs axial, radial, and angular misalignment through the elastic deformation of the metal diaphragms themselves. When minor installation deviations exist between the motor shaft and ball screw shaft, the two diaphragm sets independently distribute stresses in different directions, achieving effective compensation while maintaining high rigidity and backlash-free power transmission.
    • The double-diaphragm coupling contains no wear-prone or aging-sensitive elastic components such as rubber or polyurethane, providing a longer fatigue life and stronger environmental adaptability. Its operating temperature range can reach approximately -40°C to +200°C, allowing it to maintain stable mechanical performance even under conditions such as servo motor heat generation during high-speed operation or continuous mechanical transmission loads. Meanwhile, the coupling adopts an axial clamping connection design, enabling zero-backlash transmission and providing an important foundation for the high-precision machining performance of the CNC wood lathe.
    • During high-speed acceleration, deceleration, frequent direction changes, or sudden cutting load impacts, the transmission system is subjected to significant instantaneous torque shocks. Thanks to the excellent elastic recovery capability of the metal diaphragms, the double-diaphragm structure can absorb part of the impact energy through slight elastic deformation, reducing vibration transmission to the servo motor, ball screw, and other transmission components. This helps improve the machining accuracy and long-term stability of the CNC wood lathe.

These materials place extremely high demands on the internal structure and negative pressure performance of the dust collector. This system is equipped with a 7.5kW high-performance motor and a customized high-static-pressure impeller, delivering a maximum airflow of up to 7,325 m³/h. It ensures that the airflow velocity at each dust extraction port remains consistently above 20 m/s. The core system adopts dual-vortex separation technology, optimizing the cyclone airflow structure to efficiently separate and collect large wood chips and fine dust particles.
    • Woodworking dust can easily clog filter cartridges, causing a significant reduction in suction performance in conventional dust collectors. To overcome this issue, the system is equipped with an automatic high-pressure pulse jet cleaning system. By releasing high-pressure air pulses instantaneously, the system performs reverse air cleaning on the filter cartridges, causing fine dust attached to the outer surface of the filters to detach and fall into the collection bin below. Even during long-duration, high-intensity machining operations, the system can maintain optimal suction performance without requiring frequent manual cleaning or intervention.
    • The entire dust collector features a heavy-duty steel frame structure with high load-bearing capacity and is equipped with heavy-duty caster wheels, allowing flexible movement between different workstations. This design makes routine maintenance and dust bin cleaning more convenient. In addition, the number and size of air inlets can be customized according to actual requirements. With operating noise strictly controlled at ≤75 dB(A), the system provides powerful dust extraction performance while creating a more comfortable working environment for operators.

    • 1. What Is a 5-Axis Simultaneous CNC Wood Lathe?

A 5-axis CNC Wood Lathe, as its name suggests, is an advanced CNC woodworking machine equipped with five motion axes and capable of achieving multi-axis coordinated movement through a CNC control system.

In traditional 3-axis CNC Wood Lathes, the drive spindle is mainly responsible for rotating the workpiece at high speed, while turning tools installed at both ends of the machine remove material through linear feed movements. These machines are primarily designed for turning operations, processing wood into rotational workpieces with circular cross-sections. Typical applications include Roman columns, stair balusters, table and chair legs, baseball bats, softball bats, candlesticks, and other products with cylindrical shapes or simple curved profiles. In addition, by changing the clamping method and installing a suitable chuck, the machine can also perform end-face machining, making it suitable for producing products such as wooden bowls, Russian nesting dolls, and pen holders.

A 4-axis CNC Wood Lathe introduces an additional multifunctional machining spindle, enabling various processes such as carving, drilling, milling, and planing by changing different types of cutting tools. Meanwhile, the drive spindle is upgraded to a servo-driven spindle system, which not only supports high-speed continuous rotation but also enables precise indexing rotation for accurate workpiece positioning. This allows the machining spindle to perform detailed operations at specific positions on the workpiece. Compared with traditional 3-axis lathes, 4-axis CNC Wood Lathes offer significantly expanded machining capabilities and can complete more complex processes, including groove machining, drilling, and engraving. For example, decorative grooves and fine textures can be machined on stair balusters, while precision drilling operations can be performed on wooden products such as musical instruments.

In a 5-axis CNC Wood Lathe, an additional B-axis is introduced, allowing the machining spindle to rotate at different angles and adjust tool orientation according to machining requirements. Through coordinated movement between the B-axis and other motion axes, the tool can approach the workpiece from an optimal angle, enabling high-precision machining of complex curved surfaces, angled holes, and three-dimensional structures. Five-axis simultaneous machining greatly expands the machine’s spatial machining flexibility, allowing it to produce complex shapes that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional three-axis and four-axis equipment. Typical applications include complex chair components, irregularly shaped table legs, gun stocks, and other precision wooden parts.

    • 2. What Is 5-Axis RTCP?

RTCP (Rotated Tool Center Point) is one of the key functions of a five-axis CNC Wood Lathe. It is designed to solve the problem of tool center point displacement caused by rotary axis movement during five-axis machining. During five-axis operations, when the tool changes its machining angle through A/B-axis rotation, the tool tip position shifts due to the rotary movement. The RTCP function automatically calculates and compensates for X, Y, and Z-axis movements based on tool length, rotary angle, and spatial position changes, ensuring that the tool center point always remains aligned with the programmed machining path.

For conventional five-axis machines without RTCP functionality, operators must manually adjust machining coordinates according to different tool orientations, making programming more complicated and increasing the possibility of errors. With RTCP enabled, users only need to define the machining path based on the workpiece model. The CNC system automatically performs coordinate transformation and position compensation, making five-axis simultaneous machining more accurate and smoother while significantly reducing the programming difficulty of complex machining operations.

    • 3. Is a 5-Axis CNC Wood Lathe Difficult to Operate?

Not at all. Thanks to its intelligent control system and automated features, the CATEKCNC 5-axis CNC wood lathe is even easier to operate than many traditional 3-axis CNC wood lathes, the machine is pre-configured with basic tool compensation parameters, eliminating the need for complicated manual tool setting procedures. If tools need to be replaced later, the machine is equipped with an automatic tool setter that can automatically detect tool length and complete tool compensation, ensuring machining accuracy while improving tool change efficiency and reducing manual adjustment requirements.

In addition, the machine supports professional post-processing software. Users only need to import the machining drawings, and the system can automatically generate the corresponding CNC programs without manual programming or the need to manage complex relationships between multiple axes. Operators can focus on product design and machining results, while the machine automatically handles complex toolpath planning and coordinate transformations, making five-axis machining simpler, more efficient, and more accessible.

    • 4. What Machining Functions Can a 5-Axis CNC Wood Lathe Perform?

      1. Turning of rotary workpieces

The 5-axis CNC wood lathe drives the workpiece to rotate at high speed through the drive spindle, while turning tools perform operations such as external turning, internal boring, taper turning, contour forming, and end-face machining. It is suitable for a wide range of wood products with rotational symmetry. Typical applications include: Roman columns, stair balusters, handrails, table and chair legs, sofa legs, decorative furniture columns, baseball bats, softball bats, wooden handles, candlesticks, vases, wooden bowls, Russian nesting dolls, pen holders, and more.

      2. Machining of complex surfaces and irregular structures

The 5-axis simultaneous machining capability allows the spindle to adjust its cutting angle in real time according to the workpiece geometry, enabling the tool to approach the workpiece from multiple directions and perform complex spatial operations that are difficult or impossible to achieve with traditional 3-axis or 4-axis machines. Capabilities include: complex surface milling, 3D relief carving, irregular contour forming, multi-angle bevel machining, and spatial structure trimming. Typical applications include: intricately shaped chair armrests, Queen Anne legs, Chippendale legs, animal-style furniture legs, sculptures and artistic woodwork, and architectural decorative components.

      3. Multi-process combined machining

Equipped with a 5-axis 4-station machining head, the machine can hold multiple types of tools and automatically switch between them according to processing requirements, enabling continuous multi-process production. Capabilities include:

      Drilling: for connecting holes, decorative holes, and musical instrument finger holes;

      Grooving: for decorative textures and structural slots;

      Milling: for flat surfaces, curved surfaces, and contouring;

      Engraving: for patterns, text, and relief work;

Planing: for surface finishing and profile shaping.

    • 5. How Is the CNC Wood Lathe Shipped?

To ensure the machine remains in excellent condition during long-distance transportation, CATEKCNC CNC Wood Lathes undergo professional packaging and protective treatment before shipment.

Before shipping, the machine is partially disassembled according to transportation requirements. For example, components such as the automatic loading rack need to be removed. All disconnected parts, including air hoses, cables, and connectors, are labeled with corresponding identification numbers, allowing customers to quickly complete installation and reconnection after receiving the machine.

For packaging, the main machine body is protected with multiple layers of waterproof film and impact-resistant foam, then enclosed in an export-standard fumigation-free wooden crate. This provides effective protection against moisture, impact, and compression during transportation. In addition, key motion components such as guide rails and racks are coated with anti-rust oil before shipment to prevent corrosion caused by environmental changes during long-distance transport, ensuring the machine can be quickly installed and put into operation after arrival.
