This type of lathe can be categorized into four-axis three-linkage lathes, four-axis four-linkage lathes, and five-axis five-linkage lathes. Among them, the multi-functional spindle of the four-axis three-linkage lathe is only allowed to move in the feed direction, making it suitable for carving on rotating surfaces or grooving along the rotational curves of these surfaces. The spindle of the four-axis four-linkage lathe can move linearly in six directions—front, back, left, right, up, and down—and can coordinate with the rotary axis for linkage machining. This enables it to perform carving and grooving in any direction on the flat or curved surfaces of complex workpieces. The five-axis five-linkage lathe is even more sophisticated. It includes all the functions of the four-axis linkage lathe, and additionally, its carving spindle can rotate ±90°, allowing multi-angle carving and drilling or carving on the inclined surfaces of workpieces.
Turning-carving combination lathes can process all the products that a conventional turning lathe can handle. What Does"Axis"and"Four-Axis Linkage"Mean in The Name of A Lathe?
To feed various machining operations in reality into a CNC control system,it is necessary to abstractly characterize the various machining components and operations in the machine.
First,CNC lathes have several axis directions,and we use the classical Cartesian coordinate system to describe these directions.The direction parallel to the drive spindle(and also parallel to the bed)is the Z-axis,the direction horizontally perpendicular to the Z-axis is the X-axis(the direction of the lathe tool,and also parallel to the end face of the loaded workpiece),and the axis that is orthogonal to the Z-axis and the X-axis is the Y-axis(perpendicular to the floor).
The physical axes of a CNC lathe are usually described by the directions of the above axes,such as cross slide because along the bed to move,we can call it Z-axis;lathe tool is parallel to the end face of the workpiece to feed,we can call it the X-axis;carving axis will generally be vertically down the carving,we call it the Y-axis.But the reality is often more complex,to the following situation as an example:
1.The simplest single-tool lathe has only one tool,which feeds in the X-axis direction.We can program it as the X-axis,which is easy to understand.This lathe is called a two-axis lathe(cross slide,the axis in the tool feed direction).
2.If there are two symmetrical turning tools,although they both move in the X-axis direction,they are controlled by independent motors and can be operated individually or in conjunction.For convenience,we will program them as the X-axis and Y-axis in the CNC system.We call this lathe a three-axis lathe.
3.An carving axis is added in the direction perpendicular to the ground,and the drive spindle must also be replaced with a rotary axis(A-axis)that can dynamically adjust its speed based on the working conditions of the other axes.The carving spindle performs carving on the workpiece through its own rotation and linear movements up,down,left,and right.This type of lathe is called a four-axis three-linkage lathe.If a universal bracket is added,enabling the carving spindle to move linearly in six directions—front,back,left,right,up,and down—it is referred to as a four-axis four-linkage lathe.
4.In a double-tool lathe,if a drilling spindle is added to the tailstock to drill holes in the cross section of the workpiece,this drilling tool is usually non-rotating and is driven by an independent motor(it only feeds horizontally with the help of the tailstock).It is still considered a three-axis lathe.
5.In a double-knife lathe,there are three processing tools(such as planers,sanding wheels,and punching tools)installed in the X-axis direction.It has multiple tools in the X-axis direction,so we no longer continue the"*-axis"naming,we call it a 3-in-1 multifunctional lathe.
