REDUCE MANUAL TOOL CHANGES WITH AN ATC CNC ROUTER
A standard CNC router usually requires manual tool changes when a machining job involves different cutting tools. This means the operator may need to stop the machine, replace the tool, and check the tool settings before continuing production. For jobs involving frequent tool changes, these extra steps can increase downtime and interrupt the workflow.
An ATC CNC router with an automatic tool changer can automatically select and change tools according to the machining program. This allows compatible operations such as cutting, drilling, grooving, milling, and engraving to be completed in sequence with less manual intervention.
For furniture manufacturers, cabinet makers, and other woodworking businesses, an ATC CNC router offers several practical advantages:
Less manual intervention: Automatic tool changing reduces the need for operators to change tools by hand during machining.
More efficient multi-process machining: Different operations can be performed in sequence without stopping the machine for manual tool changes.
Reduced setup interruptions: Keeping suitable tools in the magazine helps simplify jobs that require multiple tools.
More consistent production workflows: Automatic tool changing helps standardize tool selection during repeated machining jobs.
Flexible production options: Different tool magazine configurations and optional machining functions can be selected according to production requirements.
An ATC CNC router is particularly useful when your production involves frequent tool changes or multiple machining operations on the same workpiece. For simple jobs that use only one tool, a standard CNC router may already meet your needs.
We have summarized the automatic tool change CNC router machines required by various industries for your reference and selection, to help you choose the most cost-effective and best quality machines in 2026 to assist you in realizing your great business plan.
How We Achieve Automated Efficiency: Two Approaches to ATC
To maximize production efficiency, our CNC routers utilize two primary methods for automatic tool switching, each tailored to specific manufacturing requirements:
Multi-Spindle System (Multi-Process Router)
One is a relatively simple solution, called a multi-process router or a multi-function switching router. This type of machine is equipped with multiple spindles, each clamping different tools, but these spindles cannot be used at the same time. It controls the switching of multiple spindles through cylinders, and can continuously process multiple processes on one machine.
This method of tool change is very fast. Now there is a technology for tool change in 0 seconds. The specific implementation method is: when the tool needs to be changed, the system will pre-start the spindle tool to be used in the next process and make it reach the target speed. After the current spindle completes all processing operations, the target spindle will be switched down immediately for processing, saving the start-up delay time of the target tool after switching the spindle, and improving the processing efficiency, but this type of machine has a limited number of tools to choose from (generally equipped with 2-4 spindles).
True Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) System
The other can achieve true automatic tool change. It is equipped with an automatic tool changer (ATC), which consists of an external tool magazine and a spindle that can change tools. The external tool magazine is divided into two types: linear and carousel, with 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 tool magazines available. The automatic tool change spindle is also specially designed to automatically remove and clamp the tool. This type of machine is equipped with a tool length sensor to automatically adjust the Z-axis height and automatically calculate tool compensation, which improves work efficiency and reduces the difficulty of operation.
What is The Difference Between a Linear Tool Changer and a Carousel Tool Changer?
At present, the two most common tool magazines on the market are linear tool magazines and disc-type tool magazines. Let's talk about the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of tool magazines respectively.
Linear tool magazine
This type of tool magazine is arranged in a straight line, it has a simple structure and is cheap. It is divided into fixed-type tool magazine and follow-type tool magazine. The fixed-type tool magazine is usually installed at the tail of the machine, whenever the tool needs to be changed, the gantry needs to move to the tail end of machine to complete the tool change operation, and then move back to the processing position to continue processing. This reciprocating process is a waste of time. After continuous updating and development, there is also a follow-type linear tool magazine to choose from. It is usually installed under the gantry of the CNC router and can move with the gantry, when changing the tool, the cylinder pushes the tool magazine out. It greatly saves the time of changing the tool to and from the tail of the machine tool and improves the processing efficiency. However, the structure of the follow-type tool magazine has certain limitations. Since it is placed under the gantry, it will affect the maximum height of the workpiece that the machine can process, and it is usually used in the production of cabinets, wardrobes, wooden doors, office furniture and other industries, the products processed in these industries are mostly sheet materials with a thickness of no more than 100mm.
Carousel tool magazine
This type of tool magazine is a carousel-style structure, which is driven by an independent servo motor to rotate for tool change. This type of tool change structure is stable and the tool change speed is faster. It is generally installed on the side of the machine gantry and moves with the gantry, without affecting the processing height of the machine. Its disadvantage is that the cost is relatively high, and because it is equipped with an independent servo motor drive, the machine needs to add a control axis, which makes the price of the CNC system rise accordingly, further increasing the price of the machine.
There is no difference between the two tool change methods in the user's daily use and operation, and the difficulty of learning and operation is basically the same. Their difference is mainly reflected in the mechanical structure design, and users can choose according to their own budget and processing needs.
What Other Function Packages can be Selected to Enrich the ATC Router?
Automatic loading and unloading
Adding this function can greatly save the time and workload of manual loading. Two or three suction cup devices are added behind the router gantry to grab the plate from the hydraulic storage platform and drag the plate to the processing area through the movement of the gantry. Then, the positioning cylinder accurately positions the plate, and the vacuum clamping platform adsorbs it before processing. The hydraulic loading platform is usually equipped with a sensing device that can automatically adjust the height according to the number of stacked materials to ensure that it is level with the machine platform.
After the plate is processed, the pusher device located under the gantry will automatically drop and push the processed finished product to the unloading platform through the movement of the machine gantry. The unloading platform usually adopts a conveyor belt structure with sensing devices at both ends. Once it detects that material is pushed onto the platform, the conveyor belt starts to rotate and automatically stops when the material is delivered to the end of the platform. In addition, the automatic loading and unloading system of the CNC router is highly flexible and scalable. The number and layout of the loading and unloading mechanisms can be flexibly adjusted according to production needs to meet the production needs of different scales and types.
Moreover, it can also form an intelligent production line with other automated equipment such as robots, edge banding machines, drilling machines, labeling machines, etc., to realize the automation and intelligence of the entire production process, truly liberate manpower, and create a fully automated unmanned workshop.
Drilling package
The drilling package can perform drilling operations at multiple holes at the same time, greatly improving production efficiency and suitable for rapid mass production. This advantage is particularly evident in cabinet production. Its processing accuracy can reach ±0.02mm, which can ensure the vertical accuracy of the hole position and meet the needs of high-precision furniture production. The drilling package is combined with the CNC router system to realize automated operation, so that the raw material cutting and drilling are completed at one time, reducing manual intervention to avoid errors caused by secondary processing, effectively improving product quality and accuracy, and ensuring that panel furniture can be seamlessly connected during assembly.
Saw blade
When cutting hard or thicker plates such as solid wood boards, honeycomb aluminum, and thickened solid wood boards, using ordinary cutting tools may require layered cutting, low cutting efficiency, and even difficult to cut aluminum plates. Saw blades can easily cut various types of plates, improve cutting efficiency, and reduce tool loss.
Oscillating knife
If the business scope is wide, and it also involves the cutting of soft or foamed materials such as cloth, leather, carton, corrugated board, sponge, latex, etc., then a oscillating knife cutting machine is needed. However, purchasing a oscillating knife cutting machine alone is expensive and takes up space. You can choose to add this function directly to the CNC router to meet the needs of diversified business.
Fourth axis rotation axis
When 3D carving such as European table and chair legs, figures or special-shaped cylinders is required, this function can be added to achieve four-axis linkage carving.

Troubleshooting of CNC Machines
Observe the fault phenomenon: When the machine fails, you first need to observe and determine the specific phenomenon of the fault, such as the spindle does not rotate, the XYZ axis does not respond, the equipment makes abnormal sounds, etc.
Analyze and solve the fault: According to the fault phenomenon, combined with the working principle and structural characteristics of the CNC router, analyze the possible causes. The spindle does not rotate may be an inverter alarm. At this time, you should refer to the inverter's instructions to determine the cause of the alarm, such as overload, lack of phase, etc. If the drive motor does not respond, check whether the drive power supply is normal and whether there is an alarm phenomenon. If the display is not bright, it is a power supply system problem, so the line should be checked. If an alarm occurs, refer to the manual to find the corresponding alarm code, find the cause of the alarm to eliminate the alarm. If the equipment responds abnormally, first observe whether there is any foreign object stuck in the machine, or check whether the lubrication system is normal, whether the slider is damaged, etc.
If the problem still cannot be solved, it is recommended to power off the entire machine and cut off the gas source, contact the manufacturer's after-sales engineer to communicate, and investigate the cause of the fault and solve it.
Machine Maintenance
-
Daily cleaning: After the daily work, you should carefully check and clean the wood chips or dust left on the machine, especially the foreign objects attached to the guide rails and screws, to extend the service life of the machine and reduce the failure rate.
-
Lubrication maintenance: Before starting the machine every day, you need to check whether the oil level of the electronic lubrication system is higher than the minimum oil level line, whether the oil circuit is blocked, and ensure the normal operation of the lubrication system.
-
Gas circuit and pressure inspection: Before starting the machine every day, you should check whether the equipment air supply system has reached the optimal working air pressure and whether the vacuum pressure is normal. Ensure the safety and reliability of the processing process.
-
Regularly replace wearing parts: Regularly replace wearing parts such as tools, oil filters, guide rail protective covers, etc. Ensure processing effect, processing accuracy and performance, and improve processing quality and efficiency.

Great, a very good ATC CNC router. The salesperson Alice equipped me with 12 tools. Now I can complete all my work in one go. Before, I had an ordinary CNC router that did not have the function of automatic tool change. Every time I changed the drawing, I needed to manually change the tool, which was very time-consuming and also made me waste a lot of materials. This CNC router with automatic tool change is great and solved my problem. I can complete my task in just one go. I like this machine very much.

I run a furniture factory in Mexico, where we manufacture furniture and ship it to the United States for my brother to sell. In July, I contacted sales specialist Vera, who patiently introduced me to CNC routers, edge banding machines, and drilling machines. After about a week of learning about the equipment, I decided to purchase all three machines and planned to travel to China a month later for training.
In August, I arrived in China, and I must say, CATEKCNC's service was exceptional. During my three-day visit, they provided transportation throughout, trained me on-site to operate all three machines, treated me to authentic Chinese cuisine, and arranged accommodation for me. The technical team was incredibly patient and supportive. I even brought my own Lock & Lock connectors and successfully assembled a cabinet during the training—it was a perfect experience. I'm confident we'll collaborate frequently in the future.

We uses this newly purchased CNC router machine to produce high chairs. The curved backrest can be directly milled with a milling cutter, resulting in a very smooth finish. Now, the workers only need to handle the assembly, Good!
KernJul 09, 2025 -
A word of advice from someone who's been there: do not cut corners on an imported CNC brand. The setup and support are critical. I've heard horror stories about some no-name brands. That's why I went with CAEKCNC, and they totally delivered. The machine showed up as described, and everything worked. It saved me a huge headache.
DownsSep 15, 2025 -
Running the shop, I used to spend half my life stopping the machine just to swap tools. It was a complete headache—constant downtime, re-calibrating, and just wasting time that should have been spent actually building furniture. I was on the fence about upgrading until I had a proper chat with Pihris about the Spire series.
She wasn’t kidding—this machine is on another level. The build quality is solid as a rock; you can feel the rigidity as soon as it starts cutting.
NikolaJul 04, 2026 -
The CNC router machine arrived in excellent condition. During the assembly phase, Cici provided daily progress updates, which kept me fully informed and reassured throughout the process. Upon receipt, I conducted a thorough inspection of the control cabinet. I was particularly impressed to find key electrical components, such as circuit breakers, relays, contactors, circuit protectors, and switches from Schneider Electric. Additionally, the inclusion of surge protectors and voltage stabilizers is critical for handling voltage fluctuations common in our region.

We upgraded to this 2130 ATC router for our custom closet manufacturing shop five months ago. Standard 4x8 tables were forcing us to cut down oversized 5x9 and 5x10 melamine panels manually before loading, which wasted time and material.
With this 7x10 bed, we slide 5x10 sheets right onto the vacuum table. The linear ATC swaps between our compression spiral bits, shelf-pin drill bits, and dado cutters seamlessly. Our Cabinet Vision G-code ran smooth right out of the box. Absolutely boosted our daily closet carcass output!
MikeOct 19, 2026 -
I hesitated before buying this large ATC CNC machine for high-density foam moulds. I was worried about the price and the space it would take.
Besides foam, I have many other materials that need to be processed. After using the CK-2130-T for a short time, I found it perfect for my foam processing work.
The large table allows us to machine full big foam blocks without cutting them apart. The automatic tool changer saves a lot of time on manual tool changes. The machine runs stably with little vibration, and the foam products have a smooth surface.
I asked many questions about foam cutting settings, and the team answered them patiently and clearly. They also provide full after-sales guidance and free training. Since I just bought it, I haven’t needed after-sales support yet, so I can’t comment on that part.
